The Full Story

From starting at Clemson my freshman year and up to my senior year, my career passions have changed from pre-med to public health. Becoming a French and International Health Major has opened my eyes to so much, while allowing me to continue my studies of French, and having the opportunity to incorporate this into my career. Throughout my public health classes, I have learned about different career paths that allow involvement in healthcare. I gained interests in global health, environmental health, but most of all health policy. Health policy allows me to fulfill my many interests because there are policies for the environment and globally, which brings me to pursue a career in health policy after obtaining my undergraduate degree.

There are many aspects of my undergraduate career that have and continue to guide me in the direction of health policy. I have learned about inequalities in healthcare, much of which has to do with access. Through a creative inquiry I was able to conduct research on Clemson undergraduate mental health focusing on depression and anxiety, and I found that there could be improvements with how mental health is handled at Clemson, such as broadening awareness of resources available and access to them. I also learned through my Global Health course and internship that there are sometimes no policies or codes in place on infrastructure, which in turn can lead to sanitation issues and poor health. This is what I learned from researching Togo's health in my Global Health course. All of these can be improved by changing or implementing policies.

Health policy allows me to incorporate my communication and leadership strengths. I have strong communication skills verbally and written, which is exhibited in many of my coursework samples. I have been able to take on leadership roles, for example, the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students Social Media Chairperson. I have had the opportunity to conduct meetings, recruit members, and make decisions on how to run the organization. By working with the Department of Languages I have had the opportunity to gain IT experience, which is knowledge that is critical in the current time. These are all skills that are needed when making decisions to impact a large population of individuals whether it is through discussions with policy makers, writing policies, or working in administration with a hospital. My career goals also connect to my core values of dedication, making a difference, success, and happiness.
